Why Language Patterns?
Language Patterns is
-
developed and tested in Canadian classrooms, and
-
fully consistent with the Ontario Language Curriculum (2023) and
-
the recommendations of the Ontario Human Rights Commission Report, Right to Read (2022).
Language Patterns is
-
systematic, comprehensive and science-based.
-
It includes phonemic awareness, letter-sound based decoding, orthographic and morphological knowledge, as well as
-
comprehension, critical thinking, and creative writing
-
all developed around a sound synthetic phonics core.
The Language Patterns Decodable Library for Grade One is a set of 59 little books, each one completely decodable when the necessary grapheme-phoneme patterns have been learned. Everything you need to teach those patterns is available for free, right here!

The Language Patterns program is a comprehensive, Canadian reading and language program for Grade 1 or the first year of English instruction. It can also be used for Tier II intervention.

There is a plethora of free resources to support you in your teaching the Language Patterns scope and sequence.

First and foremost are the free worksheets, which cover the complete program. Every book has a QR code that takes you directly to the resources necessary to teach the skills and concepts relevant to the story. You can buy workbooks if you wish, either spiral bound to lie flat or perfect bound to save money.

The Teacher Editions provide simple, flexible instructions for every page of the activity books. The program is not highly scripted, but there is sufficient instruction to support you in all your lessons. Download the free PDFs or get your own hard copies, in perfect or spiral binding.

There are lots of other resources you can download. There is a complete set of Sound Wall cards, each featuring both letters and keyword images to remind the students of each GPC they learn.

Sound Search - one of the many activities your students will enjoy. Talk about the pictures and sounds, but don't be be fooled by the tricky one! A great phonemic awareness exercise.

Your students might enjoy the free Flash Cards. Each card has the keyword image on one side and the sound spelling on the other.

Stories that your students will decode and enjoy!
Students can read each story using the skills they have learned so far. The texts are real stories, right from the start!

The decodables are amusing and engaging, even when they only use 5 sounds! Students discover the thrill and pleasure of reading real stories, with character and plot, humour and suspense.

The Language Patterns Decodable Library includes lots of original art and text to represent Canadian diversity and introduce Indigenous themes.

The illustrations that accompany the decodable stories are carefully designed to supplement, not duplicate the text. The pictures have lots to talk about, but students can't predict the text.

There are lots of free tools for you to use with the Decodable Library. A sound blender and a word chain builder, both keyed to the letters and sounds related to each decodable! And a tool to show letter formation animations!

Language Patterns is a comprehensive program - not only phonics! The program features exercises for comprehension, morphology, grammar, punctuation and more.

There is a page to practice formation of each letter and digraph the students will be using.
