Working with Letters and Sounds 1 (WLS 1): Student Edition. This is the first of four structured and yet imaginative activity books that provide explicit instruction and practice in all of the elements of the 2023 Ontario Language Curriculum. Each WLS lesson includes every strand of the Reading Rope: expressive and receptive language, vocabulary, phonemic awareness, alphabetic knowledge, printing, decoding, spelling, morphology and syntax, comprehension, inference, verbal reasoning and critical thinking, all introduced systematically, and woven around a systematic phonics core. From the first lesson, students use these developing skills to broaden their background knowledge, explore their cultural identity, and deepen their understanding of indigenous perspectives. By the time they have arrive at “P is for Pumpkin”, at the end of October, students will also have read all the stories in their first Decodable Collection, Sam Sits.
