Working with Letters and Sounds 1 (WLS 1): Teacher Edition. Contains lesson plans and teaching tipsto teach the key elements of Science of Reading instruction, including:

- understanding the alphabetic principle, and applying it to reading and spelling - isolating initial, middle and final phonemes,

- forming automatic associations between letters and sounds (GPCs),

- blending phonemes to read single words, phrases and sentences, and stories

- segmenting phonemes in order to spell words, phrases and sentences,

- practicing common sentence patterns and points of syntax, including the use of the definite and indefinite articles, prepositional phrases and sentence patterns with “this” and “that”.

- recognising and using a consonant digraph (th) to read and spell,

- sounding out consonant clusters, to form “blends.” - using picture and context cues to infer the meaning of new words (after they have decoded them.)

- using their phonics knowledge to read and spell/write decodable words, phrases and sentences

- ability to arrange elements of a story in logical sequence, - ability to tell stories orally.

- applying all of their developing skills to independent reading.

- deciding among possible spellings of a sound, depending on its position in a word.

By the end of the starter duo, Working with Letters and Sounds 1, and Decodables 1, “Sam Sits”, students will have read almost 700 words, in inclusive and engaging stories, full of suspense and mischievous humour.
